Zone System
What is a zone system?
In typical homes, you have one HVAC system with a single thermostat, located on the first floor. When the thermostat senses the temperature drops or rises, it communicates with the furnace or A/C to be turned on. The equipment heats or cools to satisfy the thermostat in that specific spot. The rest of the house can be a completely different temperature as it’s only regulating the location with the temperature sensor.
Manuel Dampers
With zoning, you can manually open and close dampers to peruse the temperature of your liking. Manual dampers are sometimes located at the trunk duct in the basement, where you can close them to allow more air into the opened duct. Creating change in airflow can help balance the temperature within the home.
Automatic DampersEach room will have a thermostat where you can change the temperature of that room alone. Motors open and close the dampers from within the duct work. Each system can open or close the dampers according to their desired temperature for individual zones.
